Open Letter to Flagbearers, Excellencies Mahama and Bawumia: Choosing a Running Mate- Your Potential Vice President

Your Excellencies, Mahama and Bawumia,

I write to you, believing you are sound and in good health, for so I wish you, most especially as you embark on a significant journey towards the upcoming 2024 presidential elections. The political landscape is dynamic, and the choices you make will undoubtedly shape the future of our great nation, Ghana for good or ill.

We, as concerned citizens and avid followers of the democratic process, note with great interest that both of you have previously served as running mates and subsequently as vice presidents in the history of our country. This rare and shared experience places you in a unique position to appreciate the pivotal role that a vice president plays in the governance structure of our nation. The choice of a running mate is critical, viewed from the angle that depending on which of you wins the election, the person you chose to run with, will automatically become the vice president. Automatically! (This is not by fire by force, but by the dictates of our constitution)

The vice presidency is not just a symbolic position but a crucial one, as outlined in the constitution. The vice president is tasked with supporting the president in the execution of their duties, contributing to policy formulation, and stepping in when the need arises. Given your wealth of experience in these roles, we implore you to be guided by the lessons learned during your respective tenures as vice presidents in choosing your running mates for the 2024 elections.

It is our sincere hope that you prioritize qualities such as competence, integrity, and a commitment to public service when considering potential candidates. The vice president should not only be a capable individual but also someone who complements your leadership style, bringing diverse perspectives to the decision-making process. (Do not pick a person who will be so milleable such that he will bring no diversity in opinion nor  one with whom you will be fighting at cabinet. Kindly forgive my mischief)

In making this choice, we encourage you to consider the future of Ghana and the legacy you wish to leave behind. The selection of a running mate is not only about winning an election but also about building a team that will collaboratively lead our nation towards progress, unity, and prosperity.

I have picked the duty, during this time, while combing for your respective running mates, to remind you of some cardinal signposts that should guide you, and this letter is the first in a series of discussions on the importance of this decision. We anticipate that the subsequent letters and conversations will aid you in the selection process.

Ghana’s democracy is strengthened when citizens actively participate in the political discourse. Therefore, we look forward to witnessing a deliberative and inclusive process that reflects the values of our nation.

Thank you for your dedication to public service, and we wish you all the best in your endeavors.

Sincerely,

TWENEBOA-KODUAH DICKSON, Esq
